CDPA, PC PARTNERS WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

ATHENS/HUNTSVILLE, AL – Local CPA firm CDPA, PC, has partnered with the Athens/Limestone County Habitat for Humanity chapter to build two new houses in Athens.  The firm has committed to providing volunteers for four weeks of construction.  The firm is headquartered in Athens; however, they have a location in Huntsville as well.  Employees from both offices are coming together to work on the houses.

“We feel like this is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community that has been so gracious to our business,” said Managing Partner David Christopher.  “Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization, and we are proud to partner with the Athens/Limestone County chapter.”

Two houses are simultaneously going up on the same street, and CDPA sends four to five employees to the worksites at least two days per week.  Everyone in the organization will have the opportunity to volunteer.

“This summer has kicked off with a bang,” said Habitat Executive Director Garth Lovvorn.  “I worry a lot about where our volunteers will come from, and this summer CDPA showed up in force to help us out.  It has been a success working with CDPA on this house, and I am impressed with the skills that some of the employees have.  The ones who did not have many building skills at the beginning are all starting to show improvement, which is what happens when you come to our jobsite with the drive to get things accomplished.”

Both Christopher and Lovvorn have challenged more businesses to give back to the community by partnering with Habitat for Humanity.

“We need donations to cover the material costs of these houses, but we need volunteers as well,” said Lovvorn.  “Skill level is not a necessity. The desire to get things accomplished and learn the construction skills to help us out is most needed.  Most places will send out a group for one day or so which is nice, but I really like the way CDPA approached this by sending volunteers out two or three times a week for a month.”

Lovvorn said that the two houses should be completed by October, and that they are both very special because they are in memory of two great gentlemen.  John White and Dick Kennemur were loyal Habitat volunteers in Athens who both worked tirelessly to get the program where it is today.  The houses are also unique in that they are both LEED Certified, which allows the houses to be energy efficient and eco-friendly.   LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

“LEED is an advanced form of “green” building, and Habitat for Humanity Athens/Limestone and Habitat for Humanity Baldwin County are the first two affiliates in the state of Alabama to move toward this certification,” Lovvorn said.
